What is yellow fever?
The yellow fever vaccine protects against a serious viral infection spread by mosquitoes in parts of Africa, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. It is recommended for anyone travelling to a risk area, and proof of vaccination is required for entry into a number of countries. A single dose provides lifetime protection for most people, and we provide the international certificate at the same appointment.
Yellow fever is a viral infection spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes, which are active during the day. It is found in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South America (including Trinidad and Tobago) and Central America, but is not present in the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand or the Pacific Islands. Early symptoms are flu-like, and a small number of people go on to develop more serious illness affecting the liver and other organs.
Who should have the yellow fever vaccine?
The vaccine is recommended for anyone aged 9 months or over travelling to, or living in, a country where yellow fever is present. There are two separate questions to answer: whether vaccination is recommended to protect you, and whether your journey requires proof of vaccination. A certificate requirement can apply even when your final destination has no yellow fever risk, including after an airport transit through a risk country. If vaccination is appropriate, you receive the vaccine and your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, usually called the ICVP.

Keep the original certificate with your travel documents. A vaccination just before departure will not make a first certificate valid immediately.

NHS or private yellow fever vaccination?
Some travel vaccines are free through a GP surgery after a travel risk assessment. Check that route if it suits your dates, and tell us about anything already arranged so our advice takes it into account.
When the NHS is the right route
Yellow fever vaccination is only given at registered yellow fever vaccination centres and is not available free on the NHS. We are a registered centre and issue the international certificate when vaccination is appropriate.

After your vaccination
Soreness where the injection was given, headache, muscle aches or a raised temperature can occur and are usually short-lived. Serious reactions are very rare but can be serious; seek medical advice if you feel very unwell in the days or weeks after vaccination.
Continue mosquito bite precautions during your trip. The vaccine does not protect against other mosquito-borne infections.

How long does yellow fever protection last?
A single dose provides lifelong protection for most people. A small number may be advised to have another dose because of their health, age at their first vaccination or future exposure. This is a separate clinical question from the lifetime validity of the certificate.
Can I have yellow fever vaccination after MMR?
The NHS advises a gap of at least four weeks after MMR before yellow fever vaccination. If your dates make that difficult, tell the clinic before booking so the pharmacist can assess the options. Do not assume the vaccines can simply be fitted around your flight.
What if I have lost my certificate?
Contact the centre that vaccinated you first. A replacement may be possible if the original vaccination details can be verified. Bring any copy, date and batch information you have; replacement arrangements and charges need to be confirmed.
Do I need yellow fever vaccination for South Africa?
South Africa has no yellow fever transmission risk, but certificate requirements can apply because of where you arrive from or transit through. Read our South Africa guide and include your full route when asking for advice.
Can I arrange advice for my child?
Tell us your child’s age, itinerary and previous vaccines. Age and health affect the recommendation, and young infants may need specialist advice. Confirm the clinic’s appointment arrangements when you book.
Do I need a GP referral for a private vaccination?
No. You can book directly with us for any of the vaccines on this page. Same-day appointments are usually available, and there is no waiting list.
How much do private vaccinations cost?
Individual vaccines range from £40 to £240, and the price includes your appointment with the pharmacist. Meningitis B is priced separately at £140 per dose (£280 for the two-dose course). Get in touch and we will confirm the exact price for the vaccine you need before you book.
Which vaccines can I get free on the NHS instead?
Several, but only for certain ages or groups. Shingles, for example, is free on the NHS from age 65, and whooping cough is offered in pregnancy. If you are not sure whether you already qualify, ask us when you get in touch and we will always tell you honestly rather than sell you something you could get free elsewhere.
Can children have these vaccines?
For suitable vaccines, yes. We will confirm what is appropriate for your child’s age at the appointment. Some services at the clinic, such as blood tests and ear wax removal, are 16 and over, but vaccination age depends on the specific jab.
Is the private vaccine the same as the NHS one?
Yes. We use the same vaccines used in the NHS programmes, for example Shingrix for shingles and the standard MMR vaccine. The difference is convenience and access, not the vaccine itself.
Do you vaccinate for travel?

How long does each vaccine last?
