What is dengue?

A dengue vaccine, Qdenga, has been available in the UK since 2023, but it is not currently recommended for everyone who wants protection. It is a two-dose course considered only for travellers who have previously had dengue and face ongoing exposure on a return trip, so suitability is always confirmed at your consultation before we book you in.

Dengue is spread by Aedes mosquitoes, which bite mainly during the day, and is not found in the UK; you cannot catch it from another person. It is common across the tropics, including parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America, the Caribbean and the Pacific islands, and there is also a seasonal risk (spring to November) in parts of southern Europe such as Croatia, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Madeira. Most people with dengue have a mild illness and recover within one to two weeks, though the risk of more serious illness increases with a second infection.

Who should have the dengue vaccine?

Qdenga is licensed in the UK from age 4. Current UK guidance (JCVI) recommends it only for people aged 4 and over who have had dengue before and are travelling to an area with a dengue risk or an ongoing outbreak, or who are exposed through their work, such as laboratory staff. At present, it is not advised for people who have never had dengue, as there is not yet enough trial data, and there is a theoretical risk of more serious illness if someone without a previous infection is vaccinated and later catches a different strain of the virus. It also is not suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, immunocompromised, or allergic to any of its ingredients.

Confirming a previous dengue infection is not always straightforward, so this is something we go through with you carefully at your consultation before deciding whether the vaccine is right for you.

Who should consider a dengue vaccine?

People aged 4 and over who have had dengue before and are travelling to a risk area
Anyone with a confirmed previous infection facing an ongoing outbreak
Laboratory and other staff exposed to dengue through their work
Not currently advised for anyone who has never had dengue

Your pharmacist confirms what applies to you at your consultation.

Understanding dengue: what you need to know

How the infection spreads and what to look out for, so vaccination sits alongside sensible precautions while you are away.

Key fact

Dengue is spread by mosquitoes that bite during the day across tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean, and seasonally in southern Europe. Most infections are mild, but the risk of serious illness rises with a second infection.

Recognise the symptoms

High temperature
Severe headache
Pain behind the eyes
Muscle and joint pain
Blotchy skin rash
Feeling or being sick

Seek urgent GP or NHS 111 advice if you are unwell after travel to a dengue-risk area; call 999 or go to A&E for severe symptoms such as bleeding or persistent vomiting.

Confirm a previous dengue infection

The vaccine is only advised for people who have had dengue before, so we go through your travel and health history at a consultation first.

First injection

Protection begins around 14 days after the first dose.

3 months later

Second injection

The second dose completes the course, so allow at least three months before you travel where you can.

NHS or private dengue vaccination?

Some travel vaccines are free through a GP surgery after a travel risk assessment. Check that route if it suits your dates, and tell us about anything already arranged so our advice takes it into account.

Not available on the NHS for travel

When the NHS is the right route

The dengue vaccine is not available on the NHS for travel. UK guidance limits it to people with a confirmed previous dengue infection, which we check at a consultation before booking you in.

Why book privately with us

No GP referral or wait for a risk assessment
The assessment and the vaccination in one visit
All our travel vaccines and malaria advice in one place
The price per dose and the course cost known before you book
A record or certificate provided for your travel file

Suitability and what to expect

Your appointment includes a check of your health and previous vaccines, so the product and schedule are right for you, including for children.

Tell us before your appointment

A severe reaction to a previous vaccine, or an allergy to a vaccine ingredient
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, immune conditions and any current treatment
A fever or feeling unwell on the day
Records of previous or combined vaccines, even if a course was not completed

Your pharmacist will explain whether to vaccinate, adjust the timing or seek further advice. Do not stop prescribed medicines before an appointment.

After your vaccination

Soreness where the injection was given, headache, muscle pain and feeling generally unwell can occur for a short time. Qdenga is a live vaccine, so tell us about pregnancy, breastfeeding or a weakened immune system before booking. Mosquito bite avoidance still matters.

Dengue Fever Vaccine cost

Prices are per dose. A follow-up dose is a separate vaccination, so plan for the full course when comparing costs. We confirm the price before anything is given.

£105

per dose

Full course: £210

Doses: 2 doses

Follow-up doses are separate vaccinations; the product, your previous doses and the assessment decide the course.

What travellers say about our clinic.

Clear advice, friendly pharmacists and appointments that fit around your plans. Here is what our travel customers have shared.

Went here for some travel vaccinations. Very efficient and very friendly staff. Make you feel very comfortable and explain everything very well.

Had numerous vaccinations carried out over the last few weeks with the clinic and I have to say they were absolutely fantastic with me. Fitting me in at short notice and delivering everything I required, I can highly recommend using the clinic and have no reservations on returning for my boosters when needed, excellent polite, professional service.

Thank you so much

Great info on what we needed for our travels. Easy to sort out medication needed. And being local it’s ideal to pick up medication

My wife and I visited the clinic for travel vaccination and health advice before a safari in in Africa. It was useful to get individual recommendations. In our experience, they are friendly and professional and not just interested in selling as many vaccinations as possible. Following consultation, some common Vaccines could be provided by the NHS, but others are available via the clinic who are also a source for things like generic Malarone.
I’d recommend the clinic.

I got my Diptheria/Tetanus/Polio, Hep A & Thyphoid vaccines done at the clinic earlier this year by Jamil Riaz. It was done quickly, comfortable clinic & nice dr.

Really fast booking process and excellent service. I would recommend this service and will definitely be using again when needed

Dengue Fever Vaccine questions

Practical answers before you book. Anything specific to your trip is covered at your consultation.

Ask us a question

Is the dengue vaccine suitable if I have never had dengue?

Not currently. UK guidance only recommends Qdenga for people with a confirmed previous dengue infection who are travelling somewhere at risk. If you have not had dengue before, we will talk through other ways to reduce your risk, such as mosquito avoidance measures, at your consultation.

How do I find out if I have had dengue before?

It can be complex to confirm, so this is not something we can answer over the phone. We will talk through your travel and health history with you at your consultation to work out whether the vaccine could be appropriate.

Do I need a GP referral for a private vaccination?

No. You can book directly with us for any of the vaccines on this page. Same-day appointments are usually available, and there is no waiting list.

How much do private vaccinations cost?

Individual vaccines range from £40 to £240, and the price includes your appointment with the pharmacist. Meningitis B is priced separately at £140 per dose (£280 for the two-dose course). Get in touch and we will confirm the exact price for the vaccine you need before you book.

Which vaccines can I get free on the NHS instead?

Several, but only for certain ages or groups. Shingles, for example, is free on the NHS from age 65, and whooping cough is offered in pregnancy. If you are not sure whether you already qualify, ask us when you get in touch and we will always tell you honestly rather than sell you something you could get free elsewhere.

Can children have these vaccines?

For suitable vaccines, yes. We will confirm what is appropriate for your child’s age at the appointment. Some services at the clinic, such as blood tests and ear wax removal, are 16 and over, but vaccination age depends on the specific jab.

Is the private vaccine the same as the NHS one?

Yes. We use the same vaccines used in the NHS programmes, for example Shingrix for shingles and the standard MMR vaccine. The difference is convenience and access, not the vaccine itself.

Do you vaccinate for travel?

Travel vaccines are handled separately because the advice depends on where you are going. See our travel health service for hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis and anti-malarial tablets.

How long does each vaccine last?

It varies by vaccine. MMR gives long-lasting protection after two doses; shingles protection is strong but not lifelong; flu is an annual jab. Our pharmacist will explain what to expect for the vaccine you are having.

Can I get more than one vaccine in the same visit?

Often yes, depending on the vaccines. Tell us what you are after when you book and we will advise whether they can be given together or need spacing out.
