The hepatitis B vaccine protects against a liver infection spread through blood and body fluids. It is worth considering for longer stays abroad, for medical or dental treatment overseas, or for any activity that carries a risk of contact with blood or body fluids. It is given as a course of three doses, which we can arrange at our Longridge clinic.
Hepatitis B is a virus spread through contact with infected blood and body fluids, including through unprotected sex, shared needles, needlestick injuries, unsterile tattooing or piercing equipment, and mother-to-child transmission at birth. It has a higher prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa, parts of Asia and the Pacific islands, the Middle East, parts of South America, and parts of southern and eastern Europe.
Who should have the hepatitis B vaccine?
For most short tourist trips the risk is low, but it rises with certain activities and circumstances: longer stays in higher-risk countries, medical or dental treatment abroad, contact sports, or any activity where you might come into contact with blood or body fluids, such as tattooing, piercing or unprotected sex. It is also recommended for aid and healthcare workers travelling for work.

Some travel vaccines are free through a GP surgery after a travel risk assessment. Check that route if it suits your dates, and tell us about anything already arranged so our advice takes it into account.
When the NHS is the right route
Hepatitis B is not on the NHS list of free travel vaccines. Your GP may offer it free if you are in an at-risk group for other reasons, such as your work or a health condition.

What if I do not have time for the full three-dose schedule before I travel?
An accelerated schedule is available, condensing the doses into a matter of weeks rather than months, with a further dose at 12 months to complete your longer-term protection. Tell us your travel date and we will advise on the best schedule for you.
Will I need a booster dose later on?
Most people who complete the full three-dose course do not need a routine booster, as protection typically lasts 20 to 30 years. Boosters are generally only recommended for people in specific higher-risk groups.
Can hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines be combined?
A combined hepatitis A and B vaccine exists and may suit some travellers who need protection against both. Let us know at your consultation and we can advise whether it is a suitable option for you.
Do I need a GP referral for a private vaccination?
No. You can book directly with us for any of the vaccines on this page. Same-day appointments are usually available, and there is no waiting list.
How much do private vaccinations cost?
Individual vaccines range from £40 to £240, and the price includes your appointment with the pharmacist. Meningitis B is priced separately at £140 per dose (£280 for the two-dose course). Get in touch and we will confirm the exact price for the vaccine you need before you book.
Which vaccines can I get free on the NHS instead?
Several, but only for certain ages or groups. Shingles, for example, is free on the NHS from age 65, and whooping cough is offered in pregnancy. If you are not sure whether you already qualify, ask us when you get in touch and we will always tell you honestly rather than sell you something you could get free elsewhere.
Can children have these vaccines?
For suitable vaccines, yes. We will confirm what is appropriate for your child’s age at the appointment. Some services at the clinic, such as blood tests and ear wax removal, are 16 and over, but vaccination age depends on the specific jab.
Is the private vaccine the same as the NHS one?
Yes. We use the same vaccines used in the NHS programmes, for example Shingrix for shingles and the standard MMR vaccine. The difference is convenience and access, not the vaccine itself.
Do you vaccinate for travel?

How long does each vaccine last?
