Why men lose their hair
Around half of men notice meaningful hair loss by their fifties, and plenty see it start in their twenties or thirties. The usual culprit is male pattern baldness. It runs in families, and it is driven by a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a by-product of testosterone. In men who are genetically sensitive to it, DHT gradually shrinks the hair follicles. Each new hair grows back finer and shorter, until eventually the follicle stops producing altogether.
That is why pattern baldness follows a predictable route: the hairline recedes at the temples and the crown thins, while the hair around the back and sides, which is less sensitive to DHT, tends to hang on.

What treatments are available for male pattern baldness?
If your consultation points to male pattern baldness, there are a handful of evidence-based options. The NHS names two medicines as the main treatments. Here is what they are, so you know what your pharmacist may discuss. Whether any is suitable, and which, is decided with a clinician at your appointment, not something to self-prescribe.
Finasteride
Prescription-only tablet
A daily tablet that lowers DHT, the hormone that shrinks the follicles in pattern baldness. It can slow the loss and, for many men, allow some regrowth. As a prescription-only medicine it is supplied only after a prescriber has checked it suits you. It is not right for everyone and is not used in women.
Minoxidil
Topical treatment
Applied to the scalp rather than swallowed. It improves blood flow to the follicles and extends the hair's active growth phase. It can be used on its own or alongside a tablet, and some men respond better to one than the other.
