Antibiotics Aren't Always the Answer, and That's a Good Thing
It is tempting to assume every UTI needs antibiotics. It does not. Plenty of mild, uncomplicated bladder infections in otherwise healthy women settle on their own within a few days with fluids, rest and simple pain relief such as paracetamol. NICE guidance actively supports a "wait and see" or back-up prescription approach for milder cases, precisely to avoid using antibiotics we do not need.
Why does that matter to you? Because taking antibiotics you did not need will not make you better faster, can give you side effects, and adds to antibiotic resistance, the reason these drugs are getting less reliable over time. Our job is to work out which camp you are in, not to hand out a prescription regardless.

If you are getting two or more UTIs in six months, or three or more in a year, that is classed as recurrent, and repeatedly reaching for a three-day course is not really solving anything. Recurring infections deserve a proper look at what is driving them.
That can mean confirming what is actually there with a urine sample sent for lab culture, reviewing risk factors and triggers, and in some cases checking wider health markers with private blood tests, for example kidney function or, where relevant, blood sugar. We can talk you through a sensible plan and, where it is beyond what a pharmacy should manage, point you to the right next step (your GP or a urologist) rather than leaving you going in circles.

How do I get antibiotics for a UTI?
There are two main routes. If you are a woman aged 16 to 64 with a straightforward UTI, an NHS pharmacist can often supply antibiotics free through Pharmacy First, no GP needed. If you are outside that group (a man, over 64, getting recurrent infections, or you would simply prefer a private booked appointment), you can have a private consultation with us and, where appropriate, we will prescribe the same day.
Can a pharmacist prescribe antibiotics for a UTI?
Yes. Our pharmacists are GPhC-registered prescribers, so after assessing your symptoms they can prescribe antibiotics for a UTI where it is clinically appropriate. You do not need to see a GP first.
How long do antibiotics take to work for a UTI?
Usually you will notice symptoms starting to ease within 48 to 72 hours of starting the course. It is important to finish the full course even once you feel better. If things are not improving after a couple of days, or they are getting worse, get back in touch. It may need a different antibiotic or further assessment.
How long does a UTI last without antibiotics?
A mild, uncomplicated bladder infection in an otherwise healthy woman can clear on its own within a few days with fluids, rest and pain relief. If symptoms are severe, are not settling after a couple of days, or you are at higher risk, do not wait it out. Get assessed.
Do you treat UTIs in men?
Yes, and it is one of the reasons this service exists. Men are not covered by the free NHS Pharmacy First UTI route. A UTI in a man is treated as more complex, so we assess it carefully and prescribe or refer as appropriate.
Can you help with recurrent UTIs?
We can. If you are getting them repeatedly (two or more in six months, or three or more in a year), we will look at what is behind it rather than just repeating a short course, which can include a urine culture and wider health checks, and refer you on if you need specialist input.
What if it might be a kidney infection?
If you have a high temperature, pain in your side or lower back, sickness, chills or new confusion, that can mean the infection has reached the kidneys and needs urgent care. Call 111 or 999, do not book a routine appointment.
Do I need an appointment or a referral for UTI treatment?
No GP referral is needed and you can book directly with us. Appointments are quick to arrange and same-day slots are usually available.
Is the UTI appointment by phone or in person?
Either. Many people find a phone consultation easiest for a UTI, but you are welcome to be seen in person at our Longridge clinic if you would prefer.
