The Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea PCR Urine test detects the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae using a urine sample. It is a reliable method for diagnosing two of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in both men and women.
Chlamydia and gonorrhoea frequently cause mild symptoms or no symptoms at all, which means infections can remain undetected and continue to spread. Testing supports early diagnosis, timely treatment, and reduced risk of passing the infection to partners.
This urine-based option is commonly used for routine screening, for investigating symptoms, or for checking after a change in sexual partner.
Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are common STIs and are often asymptomatic, meaning many people do not realise they are infected. Without testing, infections can remain untreated and may lead to complications affecting reproductive and urinary health.
Potential complications can include:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, which may lead to chronic pelvic pain or infertility
- Cervicitis and other reproductive tract infections
- Increased risk of ectopic pregnancy in women
- Urethritis and epididymitis in men
Early detection enables treatment to begin promptly, reducing the likelihood of complications and helping prevent transmission to partners.
Chlamydia
A common bacterial STI that may cause urinary or reproductive symptoms, but is often asymptomatic. Untreated infection can lead to reproductive complications.
Gonorrhoea
A bacterial STI that can affect the genital tract and urinary system. It may present with discharge or pain, but can also be symptom-free.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
An infection-related inflammation of the female reproductive organs, often linked to untreated STIs, and associated with chronic pelvic pain and fertility issues.
Cervicitis
Inflammation of the cervix that may be caused by infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea, sometimes presenting with discharge, bleeding, or discomfort.
Urethritis
Inflammation of the urethra, which can cause burning or pain when urinating and may be linked to STIs.
Ectopic Pregnancy Risk (infection-related)
Previous or untreated infections can contribute to scarring in reproductive tissues, increasing the risk of ectopic pregnancy.
Epididymitis
Inflammation of the epididymis in men, which can cause testicular pain and swelling, and may be associated with untreated STIs.

How accurate are home finger-prick tests compared to clinic tests?
Our home finger-prick tests use the same accredited laboratories as our clinic tests. While clinic tests allow for more comprehensive panels, home tests are highly accurate for the parameters they measure.
Do I need a GP referral for a blood test?
No, you don’t need a GP referral. You can book directly with us for any blood test. We are a private clinic offering direct access to comprehensive blood testing.
How old do I have to be to have a blood test?
We will only draw blood from those aged 16 and above due to legal requirements.
How long does it take for the blood test results to come?
If you have used our clinic to complete a blood test, we send off all samples the same day to the lab to be processed. If you have used a home test kit, then once your sample has been sent off the lab will analyse your sample. Results are usually received within 72 hours.
How do I perform the home finger-prick test?
Your home blood test kit will contain easy-to-follow instructions on how to take your own finger blood sample. If you have any concerns or questions prior to using the kit, please contact our phlebotomists who will be happy to assist.
How do I prepare for a blood test?
There is no preparation required prior to taking any of the blood tests. Please simply remember to stay hydrated prior to your appointment. This is to help your veins dilate better to enable a quick and efficient blood sample to be taken and reduce the risks of feeling faint following your blood test.
Please inform the phlebotomist before your test if you are currently taking any blood thinning medication.
Should I fast before my blood test?
Fasting is not required for most blood tests. However, if your profile includes cholesterol tests and you’ve previously had high levels, consider fasting for 8 hours beforehand. While not essential, fasting can provide more accurate results.
Note: Fasting means abstaining from any food and drink, except for water.
