ANCA (Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies)

A specialist test used to support the diagnosis of autoimmune conditions such as vasculitis. It helps identify inflammation in the blood vessels that may cause unexplained symptoms. Ideal if your clinician is investigating persistent inflammation, recurring infections, or unusual immune-related issues.

- Uses of This Test
The ANCA (Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibodies) blood test detects antibodies that target neutrophils, a type of white blood cell. These antibodies are often produced in response to autoimmune conditions and can indicate inflammation in blood vessels (vasculitis).
Autoimmune vasculitis and related immune conditions can present with a wide range of symptoms and may progress if left undetected. Identifying abnormal antibody activity allows clinicians to assess potential immune-driven disease processes and guide appropriate referral, monitoring, or treatment pathways. This test plays an important role in supporting earlier detection of complex autoimmune conditions and improving diagnostic clarity when symptoms are unclear or multi-system in nature.
ANCA antibodies are produced when the immune system mistakenly targets components of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell involved in immune defence. When these antibodies are present, they may trigger inflammation in blood vessels and surrounding tissues, potentially affecting organs such as the kidneys, lungs, sinuses, skin, and nervous system.
Autoimmune vasculitis can be difficult to diagnose because early symptoms are often non-specific and may mimic infections, allergies, or chronic fatigue. Symptoms may include persistent sinus problems, unexplained rashes, joint pain, breathlessness, blood in urine, nerve symptoms, or ongoing inflammation without a clear cause.
Testing for ANCA antibodies supports the investigation of immune-mediated inflammation and helps clinicians determine whether further specialist assessment is required. Early identification can reduce the risk of long-term organ damage and improve treatment outcomes.
ANCA-Associated Vasculitis
A group of autoimmune conditions that cause inflammation of small and medium blood vessels, potentially affecting the kidneys, lungs, sinuses, nerves, and skin.
Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA)
A form of vasculitis that commonly affects the respiratory tract and kidneys, often associated with positive ANCA antibodies.
Microscopic Polyangiitis (MPA)
An autoimmune vasculitis affecting small blood vessels, frequently involving the kidneys and lungs.
Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (EGPA)
A rare autoimmune condition associated with asthma, allergies, and vascular inflammation.
- Investigate unexplained systemic inflammation

How accurate are home finger-prick tests compared to clinic tests?
Our home finger-prick tests use the same accredited laboratories as our clinic tests. While clinic tests allow for more comprehensive panels, home tests are highly accurate for the parameters they measure.
Do I need a GP referral for a blood test?
No, you don’t need a GP referral. You can book directly with us for any blood test. We are a private clinic offering direct access to comprehensive blood testing.
How old do I have to be to have a blood test?
We will only draw blood from those aged 16 and above due to legal requirements.
How long does it take for the blood test results to come?
If you have used our clinic to complete a blood test, we send off all samples the same day to the lab to be processed. If you have used a home test kit, then once your sample has been sent off the lab will analyse your sample. Results are usually received within 72 hours.
How do I perform the home finger-prick test?
Your home blood test kit will contain easy-to-follow instructions on how to take your own finger blood sample. If you have any concerns or questions prior to using the kit, please contact our phlebotomists who will be happy to assist.
How do I prepare for a blood test?
There is no preparation required prior to taking any of the blood tests. Please simply remember to stay hydrated prior to your appointment. This is to help your veins dilate better to enable a quick and efficient blood sample to be taken and reduce the risks of feeling faint following your blood test.
Please inform the phlebotomist before your test if you are currently taking any blood thinning medication.
Should I fast before my blood test?
Fasting is not required for most blood tests. However, if your profile includes cholesterol tests and you’ve previously had high levels, consider fasting for 8 hours beforehand. While not essential, fasting can provide more accurate results.
Note: Fasting means abstaining from any food and drink, except for water.
